        • Kanimozhi's bail makes MK happy
Posted on 2 months ago  by azhagu

DMK president and former Tamilnadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi Monday spoke to his daughter and party MP Kanimozhi after she was given bail by the Delhi High Court in the 2G case.

'The news of Kanimozhi getting bail gives me happiness,' a relaxed Karunanidhi told reporters at his residence.

          .
Asked what will be his first words to his daughter, who has been in Delhi's Tihar Jail since 20 May, after she lands here, he said: 'At last, you have come.'

Questioned on whether Kanimozhi would be given any new position in the party, Karunanidhi said the party would decide on that as he is not an autocratic leader.

When asked about DMK MP and former union communications minister A Raja not moving a bail petition, he said if Raja seeks any assistance, it will be considered.

According to party sources, Karunanidhi was a bit cautious this time, unlike earlier times when Kanimozhi was denied bail, contrary to expectations.

During the course of the day, Karunanidhi watched television and also got in touch with DMK MPs in New Delhi about the happenings in the court.

          • 125-year-old building
Posted on 3 months ago  by azhagu

The 125-year-old building on M.S. Koil Street housing Royapuram police station is to be demolished.

The (N1) police station, one of the oldest in the city, will be shifted to a building on Arthoon Road, for whose construction the Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation has sanctioned Rs.44.7 lakh.

The old structure, according to sources, does not figure in the list of heritage buildings prepared by a committee headed by Justice E.Padmanabhan. It is in a dilapidated condition and hence needs to be pulled down, said Peer Mohammed, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Royapuram.

“The plan for the [new] building has been approved and it will be constructed on Arthoon Road on the premises where the All-Women’s Police Station (AWPS) is situated. But we are yet to get approval for shifting the AWPS to a rental building,” said Mr.Mohammed.

The proposal was made two years ago and it was approved a year ago. The final sanction, however, was received only recently. Police sources say the AWPS would be temporarily shifted to the police quarters in Kasimedu, Mint or Royapuram.

The new building will house the office of ACP law and order, crime and the AWPS. The AWPS in Royapuram is the first women’s police station in north Chennai and was inaugurated in 2002 by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.

            • Stagnant water poses big hazard
Posted on 3 months ago  by dharani

The latest problems faced by motorists and pedestrians are short circuits in underground electric cables due to stagnant water on the roads. On Monday, locals at Choolai alerted the electricity department after noticing smoke emanating from stagnant water.

A TNEB official attached to area 3 said the short circuits were occurring due to prolonged stagnation of sewer and storm water.

Several electric cables are old and worn out and need to be replaced as these are prone to shorting when water seeps underground, they said.

“Water logging has always been a perennial problem in our ward (division 58) and now the latest headache is short circuits in underground electric cables due to water stagnation. Despite several complaints the Chennai Metro Water Board authorities have taken no action,” said local resident and civic activist Mr Arani Sreenivasan.

“Whenever the issue is put before the local Metro Water officials, they only do temporary repairs on the drains and the situation worsens the next time it rains. The division, despite being located close to the city Corporation and Metro Water headquarters, suffer step motherly treatment,” he added.

“Hundreds of school children are forced to wade through stagnant sewer waste and the mosquito menace has increased due frequent water logging,” said Mr J. Dominic, a software professional and resident of Vepery. “Several residents who used to take their children out for evening walks are now avoiding it as the roads are slippery and murky,” he said.

When contacted, Metro Water official said that water logging had taken place in a few pockets of Choolai and had been cleared using motor-fitted lorries.

“The field staff are attending to the problems regularly and the situation will improve after the monsoon,” the official said.

              • FB thief nabbed in Vellore
Posted on 3 months ago  by dharani

The infamous ‘Facebook’ thief is finally in the police net.

The police arrested Mohamed Faizal Sidique, 23, on Monday night in Vellore for allegedly stealing from the house of one of his Facebook friends.
Investigations revealed that Sidique had cheated many people in the name of friendship and black magic.

“We were tailing him on the basis of a complaint lodged by one Tirupathi of Alandur who became friends with Sidique through the social networking site Facebook,” said police officials.

“Tirupathi had invited the accused to his house last week. Sidique had stolen three sovereigns of gold, a cellphone and home theatre system from Tirupathi’s house. We located him in Vellore,” police sources said.

The sleuths recovered 60 sovereigns of gold that Sidique had pledged with a pawnbroker in Vellore.
Police again questioned Sidique, who then confessed to having duped a businessman from Pallavaram who had come in contact with him over the Internet.

“He was suffering losses in his business and wanted Sidique to use sorcery to help him to run the business profitably. During his stay at the businessman’s house, Sidiquue stole 35 sovereigns of gold and told the businessman that the gold was ‘taken’ by Satan,” police said.

“Sidique told the businessman that Satan had wanted to take the life of the latter’s son but claimed that he had ‘negotiated’ with Satan who later agreed to take the gold. The businessman believed it and did not lodge a compliant. He disclosed this only when we asked about it,” police sources said.

The police believe that Sidique, who was a diploma holder and good with computers, could have cheated many others in similar manner.

                • Arasu Cable may hurt DTH operators with low subscription
Posted on 3 months ago  by azhagu

Arasu Cable might be a “blow” to DTH operators in Tamil Nadu, if the state-owned multiple system operator (MSO) adds prominent pay channels to its bouquet and still offers connection at Rs 70 a month, said industry sources.

The DTH industry has already been burdened with ‘entertainment tax' in the State, making a DTH connection at least twice as expensive as cable connection. “This (Arasu) will only hamper the digital penetration in the State,” said a highly placed source in the industry.

DTH operators pay around 30 per cent of the revenue to the Government by way of licence fee and taxes, and 50 per cent to broadcasters. For example, if a subscriber pays Rs 135 a month, the DTH operator pays around Rs 40 to the Government by way of taxes and a little over Rs 65 to broadcasters. That leaves only Rs 30 with the operator.

With the average revenue per user (ARPU) remaining a big challenge for DTH operators, it will take years even to recover the subscriber acquisition cost (which is hovering around Rs 4,000) – and hence breaking even still remains a distant dream for them.

Besides, the Government has a very aggressive and, at the same time, addressable digitisation target in order to bring transparency in TV connections and declarations so that the share of revenue that is due to the Government and broadcaster will go up. Alongside, if the Government tax DTH platforms heavily and leave cable TV untouched, it will actually come in the way of achieving the target.

“We have to pass it on to the consumer, which will certainly slow down the digital platform's penetration in the State,” said Mr Harit Nagpal, Managing Director of Tata Sky.

Mr Sanjay Behl, Head of Reliance Digital TV, has similar views. The State-level entertainment tax in particular will certainly play a spoilsport for our growth plans in the State, he said.

Even though Arasu Cable is Government-operated, the last-mile connectivity is to be done by the LCOs, and hence ‘under declaration' of connection numbers cannot be ruled out, argued an executive of another major DTH player in the State.

Under declaration has been a serious issue as last-mile cable operators declare hardly 60 per cent (in many cases) of the actual number of TV connections they have given; hence leading to less revenue for pay channel broadcasters and the Government (by way of taxes).

Tamil Nadu has well over 90 per cent TV penetration, and hence it has become a key target market for DTH players. There are in excess of 1.6 crore C
